Byton, a startup company based in China, unveiled at CES 2018 a concept model previewing a fully connected electric SUV promised for launch next year with a price starting at about 45000$ (38000 euro). The idea is essentially making a “smartcar”, Byton wants to redefine connectivity and mobility. That’s because the company sees a future where technology replaces HP as one of the primary attractions for new car buyers. In Byton’s SUV, the traditional dash is replaced by a 1,20m long digital screen, “coast to coast” of the cabin, this is the main way the driver and front passenger interact with the car. So you can interact via gesture or voice control. This SUV’s technology integrates Amazon Alexa digital assistant and all the features that come with it. On top of this, there’s artificial intelligence that learns all your preferences on board and uses facial recognition. It means you will no longer use a key. The car will have Level 3 self-driving capability and ready for Level 4 in 2020. Byton’s SUV will be a 4WD with a 201 HP electric motor at the front and a 268 HP motor at the rear. A 71kWh lithium-ion battery will feature in the entry-level model with 200 miles (320km) range, while a 95kWh battery will be available on the top with 310 miles (500km) range. Thanks to high-speed charging, owners will be able to add 150 miles (190km) of range in 20 minutes and 80% of charge in 30 minutes.

Tesla moves forward, despite everything and everyone, despite the real or alleged alarms on its financial troubles, the brand that has brought electric mobility to the next level is under pressure. And here comes from Elon’s magic cylinder, not one but two tasty news. The first is the most announced electric truck by Tesla, named Tesla Semi. According to what Tesla says, at highway speeds and full load, the electric truck should have a range of 800 km per single charge. Thanks to the new Megacharger powered by solar panels, it will recharge power for over 640 km in 30 minutes. Of course, comparison with the current traditional trucks is hard considering that they can run up to 1600 km with only one refueling, you must see these data from the American point of view: in fact about 30% of US transport is on a regional scale with 200 miles range: that is (at least for now) the reference market, Musk then plays the comfort and safety options, thanks to a specific version of the Autopilot system, which keeps the vehicle in lane, speed and distance from other vehicles and brakes alone in case of danger. Interesting is the loading capacity of 36 tons and the one million mile guarantee. This time, however, Tesla isn’t first in this kind of business and other builders have already presented their solutions a few months ago, Cummins Aeos and Mercedes eTruck. The start of Tesla Semi’s production is scheduled for 2019, presenting the truck Musk launched another car: the new Tesla Roadster. Numbers are stunning with 0-60MPH in 1.9 seconds, quarter mile covered in only 8.8 seconds, maximum speed at 250MPH, while the autonomy is more than 600 miles. The only problem: waiting, at least, until 2020. The new Roadster has three electric motors, one installed at the front and two at the rear, making it a true 4wd. As others 2+2 sports cars, the back space is more suitable for children or handbags, while front space should be more than enough.
